I still remember the day I sat at my desk in an industrial estate on the outskirts of London and came to the stomach churning conclusion that I was sat there by choice. No one else was making me be there that day. I could at any moment, entirely of my own free will get up, walk out the door and never come back. I could even steal the entire box of teabags in the communal kitchen as I left.
In reality, I didn’t leave that day. It took me a full year to save up (not) enough money, to rent out my house, to learn how to fix a bike and to summon up a pannier full courage before I finally got on a plane to Alaska and set out to ride a giant pink bicycle 11,000 miles through every state of the USA. But that day was the day my adventure started, because that was the day I made the decision to go.
THE ADVENTURE QUEEN GRANT – Supported by Arc’Teryx
Suffice it to say, adventure has changed my life. That first big leap of faith started a chain reaction which ejected me from the mundane rut down which I was travelling, and catapulted me across bumpy, uneven plains anew. And ever since I returned home from that first big adventure, it’s been a dream of mine to give someone else the option to derail their own life too.
Enter, The Adventure Queen Grant…
WHAT’S ON OFFER?
The lucky winner of the Adventure Queen grant will receive the following package of goodies:
- £1,000 worth of Arc’Teryx kit
- Advice from Arc’Teryx Picadilly on the best equipment for your adventure
- £1,000 cash to spend on your adventure (flights, kit, someone to look after your cat)
- Mentoring from yours truly
- Logisitics and planning support from planning wizard, Framps
WHERE IS THE MONEY COMING FROM?
Don’t you know it grows on trees?! Okay, maybe not. Seriously then, in complete transparency, here’s how we’re managing to do this:
£1,000 worth of Arc’teryx kit
- Donated by Arc’Teryx Picadilly – who are just as hell bent on getting women out into the great outdoors as we are. Needless to say, Arc’Teryx are made of 99% awesome sauce, and 1% fabulous-ness for this level of support. They have literally put their money where their mouth is.
The £1,000 cash
- £300 from speaking gigs I didn’t expect to get paid for
- £200 from Adventure Queen t-shirt sales
- £500 from a raffle held at the Pants of Perspective book launch. Prizes donated included those from Animal, Crewroom and Spindrift Collections.
Mentoring and support
- From the insides of mine and Framps brain. This part of the grant is obviously, priceless.
WHAT ARE YOU AGREEING TO IF YOU APPLY?
All we ask in return for the spondoolies and support is that you are willing to share your story with the Adventure Queen community. Because inspiration feeds inspiration. All of you in this community are inspiring – and we want to shed a light on that.
If you’re a shy type, no problemos – the minimum we’re asking is that you are cool with us interviewing you, and you’d be happy to write a before, during, and after blog about your adventure. You do not have to be a social media whizz, if you are – great! But it’s not necessary.
WHO CAN APPLY?
If you have ladybits and live in the UK, you’re in. So long as you’re over 18 and female there are no limits beyond that. And by ‘living in the UK’ you don’t have to be a UK citizen, but this country should be your primary base.
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
We are looking for an Adventure Queen who is teetering right on the edge of terrified. She has never done anything quite as big as what she has planned and isn’t entirely sure that she can pull it off, but she is darn well willing to give it a go.
And so it goes without saying that if you’re an experienced adventurer, we can’t help you out with this grant. There are oodles of other grants out there for experienced peeps.
As far as method of travel for your adventure goes, we don’t mind motors if it’s a motorbike, or a paramotor, but preferably your journey will involve travelling by human power alone. Running, walking, cycling, SUP’ing, Kitesurfing, pogo’ing, rollerblading, kayaking or bellydancing. Take your pick.
WHEN SHOULD THE ADVENTURE TAKE PLACE?
Ideally your adventure should take place between February and October 2018. We are slightly flexible on that, but thems are the (rough) rules. Those dates mean we get to share your story in time to inspire grant applicants in 2018.
HOW DO I APPLY?
Of course! We nearly forgot. No we didn’t we just wanted to make sure you read all of our other crap. So:
- Download this application form
- Fill it in
- Return it by emailing it to firstname.lastname@example.org by 31st December 2017
WHEN IS THE DEADLINE?
31st December 2017. Midnight. Before we all turn into pumpkins.
WHEN WILL THE GRANT WINNER BE ANNOUNCED?
14th of February 2018, Valentine’s day. Because we HEART adventure.
WHAT DO I DO NOW?
Get your thinking cap on! And if you’re reading this and have already talked yourself out of applying because your adventure plan is not ‘big’ enough, or you don’t have one yet – then this grant is for you.
Because that stupid idea, that thing you have in your head that you think ‘I never could’ – you can, you know. It’s just about whether you choose to or not.
